( laughter ) so there's hope. >> schieffer: short of building an ark, what is romney's best chance. we'll ask new jersey governor chris christie, and one-time adversary, newt gingrich. so far romney is sticking to a familiar theme, but does he need to do more? >> i will lower the tax rate. he wants to creat to raise them. i'll create jobs and he'll kill them. also marsha blackburn, bob shrum, and larry sabato from the university of virginia center for politics. as we head into first presidential debate, we'll talk about the state of america at home and abroad with the
of managing expectations, the guy that has managed them in his own fashion is chris christie. i want to play a little chris christie sound doubling down on the fact that this is a big deal tomorrow night for mitt romney. >> this whole race will be turned upside down thursday morning. >> what are you doing, christie? for god sake's if romney fails to meet those heavy expectations he's going to lose the general election and the republican party and that's going to leave open 26 -- oh. >> setting aside for 2016, part of me applauds the fact that christie is saying what everybody believes which it's a proving ground for mitt romney. and some part of me believes maybe it would be good if mitt romney said you know what, tomorrow night is a big deal and there going to be some wins and losses and i want to deliver a powerful and specific message about what i want to offer and the path forward. >> you have to be able to do that. i think all that chris christie, all that was missing from the interview was a christie 2016 t-shirt. he's the worst surrogate ever. >> or maybe the best. >> i don't know. i

election. >> joy: when you don't have anything else, man. >> as chris christie said when you are complaining about the press, you are usually behind. i mean i'm paraphrasing. this is an outgrowth of the liberal media allegation. the press is out to get. republicans. so they have branched out and made it bigger and better in their minds. now pollsters have become part of this vast conspiracy. the liberal media has gotten all of these independent pollsters to cook their books. they even have the fox news pollster, and today rasmussen has obama up three points. so now they have everybody. it really is a vast conspiracy because no matter what direction you turn there's just more proof that it's nonsense. i mentioned the murdoch, wall street journal poll. they have done nine swing-state polls, and obama has won all of them. that tells you obama is probably doing pretty well in those states. you don't need these dilutional fantasy. but that's where the right-wing is. >> jennifer: we did a bit of this on the show on friday to look at the polls and look at the fox n
that aren't true. zpl you've got to love chris christie. sometimes, if you're going to call someone a liar, you can just call them a liar. this is a preview of what we're going to be hearing from mitt romney on wednesday. that's what some say. will it happen and will that attack work? good to seyou both. >> what's happening. >> good to be here! is he going to come out, ryan, and say, look, there you go. that famous there you go again. there's another lie or no? >> i think it's unpredictable. i'm not sure if the debate is the right place to do it. after the paul ryan speech, you have the obama campaign referring to the lies in paul ryan's speech and that's echoed by president obama's allies in the media. when you don't have the romney campaign's response robustly. for example, president obama has been running ads claiming that mitt romney's going to race taxes on the middle class. now, mitt romney has never made that claim. this is coming from a report making all kinds of arguments. and he's made all kinds of a assumptions that the romney campaign has rejected. also puts harvey rosen, you c
election, jeb bush, governor chris christie of new jersey, they mate maybe this isn't the best year for me for a lot of reasons. if one of them was the nominee and two bring the two wings of the party together you might have a real race but they had such a weak field. >> that would be a choice election where reasonable people would try to decide between the two candidates. this one is not a hard choice. last month when missouri senate candidate todd akin made his comments about legitimate rape, "time" wrote that the comments -- and the no-nothing idiocy of the plurality of the base. todd akin is not an outlier, he's a symptom of the disease. governor romney, he knows about as much about science as anybody i know. he's educated. he's got a degree in harvard in law, in business. he could do a little studying about climate change and understand it's a real challenge. and yet he just plays this know-nothing view of i don't know anything about that stuff. he does. >> he kind of reminds me of john boehner trying to preside over that house caucus of people who are fire breathing and wants the fir
, chris christie coming in, talking about the debate, also talking about how the press needs to ask tough questions of the president. but chris christie didn't get the memo that you're supposed to downplay expectations. yesterday he said his first debate was going to be a game changer. >> well, i don't think it really matters. people are making a little bit of a big deal about what he said. i think what matters is governor romney needs to close the gap on what i call the tug mcgraw principle, which is you've got to believe. he needs republicans and the press and independent voters to believe he can win. a lot of new polls out this morning. they all show, when this question's asked, people don't think romney's going to win, even a lot of people who support him think the president's going to win. i think that's one of the main things, stand with the president and convince people yeah, he's got a chance. >> you hear more and more people talking about the first debate being critical and it is with all the early voting going on, with the advantage that the president's taking in a lot of swing

to slap itself in the forehead when governor chris christie apparently didn't get the expectations memo. >> wednesday night is the restart of the campaign, i think you will see the numbers start to move right back in the other direction. thursday morning, the entire narrative of the race will change. >> reporter: in truth, debates rarely move polls in a significant ways. one notable exception was in 2000. when -- >> that's what a governor gets to do. >> dismissive al gore threw away a five-point lead in the course of three debates. >> romney advisors are just hoping for a solid performance. no knock-outs on wednesday night. >> i don't think one event is going to make or break this campaign. >> romney advisors told me they don't expect that they could level knock-out blow against president obama. the skilled debaters such as he is. always playing the expectation game. bret? >> bret: john, thanks. >> we're just five weeks and one day away from election day. and a little more than 48 hours from the first debate here in colorado. there is more focus than ever on the battleground state, colo
's presidential debate. jack's joining us now with the cafferty file. jack. >> wolf, chris christie says that mitt romney is going to kick president obama's butt in tomorrow night's debate. hey, that's the way the new jersey governor talks. chris christie thinks romney will turn the election upside down, his words, and that it will be a brand new race after the showdown in denver. no surprise romney's people ran right away from chris christie's comments pretty quickly. they're trying to lower expectations, which is how candidates normally approach these things. but let's suppose for a minute that chris christie's right. what would it take for mitt romney to win the debate and change the storyline of this election? 50 million people are expected to tune in. many think tomorrow night is romney's last best chance to turn things around. he's been practicing for the debate for months on top of the practice he got in the almost two dozen primary debates. but here's the challenge, romney has to come off as likable, authentic and show that he can coect with the voters. we've been hearing that for months,
will be shaking your head it is a brand new race. jenna: new jersey governor chris christie, making a bold prediction, how about that? the bold prediction related to the first presidential debate saying governor mitt romney's performance against the president could very well change the entire race. but how important are presidential debates and how much do they really shape the outcome in november? we heard a lot. joining me someone who has done research on polling impact of past debates. larry sabato, director of center for politics at the university of virginia. larry, historically speaking how big of a deal are the first debates really? >> well it can be a dig deal, jenna. of course governor christie was right. he got off message as you know because part of the amusing previous view to a presidential debate is the attempt by both sides to run down their own candidate. about how horrible a debater they are and the other side is so terrific. so governor christie may be committed a behalf by telling the truth. if you look historically, there is a pretty good chance that mitt romney can mak
